Carnival is Fashion!

January 31, 2018

More than the infectious music, the steel pan that can be heard from the hills and valleys, to the speakers blaring on every corner for every party on all corners of our twin island, Carnival is colour, culture and FASHION!

The streets become our runways from fete land to the big stage! There are some names that have become significant with fashion and Carnival and have been raising the bar annually! Lost Tribe in their third year, continues to include local designers in their designing team and it shows! Draped cloth, flared skirts, capes and so much more than the usual bikini and beads, proving that aspects of the traditional mas of storytelling and costuming is still alive and well.

Another band that uses their creativity to their advantage and brings their Avant Garde  aesthetic to their audience is K2K Alliance.  Art and the story of mas embody their vision and this dynamic duo ensures their purpose of mas and fashion is personified through their pieces. Their fashionable "costumes" are not just for the road but can be worn and used long after the dust has cleared. Their credo says it all "K2k- Where fashion meets mas with a purpose." What else is there to say! Even their Monday wear is fashionable while making a statement!

Speaking of Monday wear, one name that has become synonymous with the term and has actually surpassed just creating for his clients but is now a part of a new package offered by TRIBE Carnival is Rhion Romany.  Romany is known for his luxurious and sexy body and resort wear and also on everyone's lips when it comes to that beloved Monday. With this step into not just creating for the band but offering this unique package, proves that place that fashion and creativity has on the road.  Romany has also introduced for 2018 a men's wear line becoming more inclusive and expanding his ever growing reach.

Boucaud's signature weaving and Afrocentric styles cross over into her swim and Monday wear giving the wearer a bold look for the road, while Maharaj offers her flirty resort style to neon and bright coloured pieces.

Not to be out done these two designers are also ensuring their customers are fete- ready with their signature styles easily identified and admired.

Local designers are filling a void and staking their claim when it comes to Carnival they are fitting in, breaking barriers and sending messages. Accessory and jewellery designers such as CQ Accessories, De-Colle-te and Drevait offering unique styles to compliment any outfit. Adding flair and fashion to simple pieces, these creatives are leaving their mark in the artisan world and fitting right in for Carnival.
